Famous Constellations: Canis Major. The Great Dog of the Night Sky

Have you ever looked up at the night sky and seen a group of stars shining like a twinkling picture? One of the easiest constellations to find is Canis Major, which means “Greater Dog” in Latin. This constellation has a fascinating story behind it, and if you know where to look, you can find it yourself!

The Myth Behind Canis Major

Long ago, the ancient Greeks told stories about the stars. One famous tale is about Orion, a mighty hunter. Orion had a loyal dog, and many believe Canis Major represents this faithful companion. Some stories say that Canis Major is Laelaps, a magical dog who could run faster than anything on Earth. Zeus, the king of the gods, placed the dog in the sky, where it became the bright constellation we see today.

How to Find Canis Major in the Sky

Finding Canis Major is easy if you know what to look for. First, find Orion’s Belt, a straight line of three bright stars. Then, look slightly below it, and you’ll see the brightest star in the night sky—Sirius! This dazzling star is part of Canis Major and is often called the “Dog Star.”

Once you find Sirius, look for the stars forming the shape of a dog around it. You might need to use your imagination, but soon, you’ll see a picture of a great dog running through the sky!

Why is Sirius So Bright?

Sirius is the brightest star we can see at night because it is one of the closest stars to Earth and burns very hot. Ancient civilizations, like the Egyptians, used Sirius to track the seasons because it appeared in the sky just before the Nile River flooded, which helped their crops grow.

A Fun Activity for Star Gazers

The best time to see Canis Major is in the winter. If you have a pair of binoculars, try looking at Sirius—it sparkles with different colors because of the way Earth’s atmosphere bends its light. See how many different colors you can spot!

Next time you go outside at night, challenge yourself and your friends to find Canis Major. Imagine the great dog running across the sky, always keeping an eye on his friend Orion. Happy stargazing!

The best time to view this constellation, (in the northern hemisphere) is in February, at around 9pm, (latitudes between +60° and −90°.).  You can either use a sky chart (downloadable on the internet) or an app.  My favorite stargazing app is the Sky Safari app.  It’s an excellent  tool for quickly identifying the constellations, as they rotate through the celestial heavens.

Top Five Best Counting Books for Children, Ages 2-5

Ten Apples

1. Ten Apples up on Top by Dr. Seuss. Illustrated by Roy Mckie

This fun book introduces a lion, a tiger and a dog as they begin to challenge each other to a game of balancing and counting apples.  “You can do three but I can do more.”  Kids love the animals, the silliness of the prose and the competitive fun.  Which animal can balance the most apples, whilst engaging in the most outrageous stunt?

2. Ten Little Ladybugs by Melanie Gerth. Illustrated by Laura Huliska-Beith

This sturdy board-book is an instant visual attraction with its bright plastic lady bugs and beautiful illustrations.  The tactile nature of the ladybugs was always a hit with my daughters, when they were pre-schoolers.  The story commences with ten ladybugs and its melodic prose invites readers to keep turning the pages.   The countdown begins!

3.  Miss Spider’s Tea Party by David Kirk

Our family loved this beautiful rhyming story of the sociable Miss Spider’s desire to have fellow insects over for tea and cakes.  A simple counting theme (1-12) introduces the wary bugs.   Aware of the spider’s predatory nature, they shun her, until her amiable florivore personality is revealed.  Gorgeous illustrations and a sweet ending make this a very enjoyable book.

4. Chicka, Chika, 123 by Bill Martin and Michael Sampson. Illustrated by Lois Ehlert

This is another rhyming book in the same style as, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom; the winning ABC book.  The rainbow colors and bright illustrations are also present here.  But this time it is numbers, instead of letters in a race to the top of an apple tree. A swarm of bumblebees threaten the newly arrived numbers.  There is also an additional subplot with the sad zero, who becomes a hero when he leads the letters back up the tree.  Counting is by 1-20, then in 10’s, until 100 is finally reached.  The maths is a little confusing at times for this age group.  But this book, like its alphabet companion, is still great fun!

5. Richard Scarry’s Best Counting Book Ever by Richard Scarry

Willy Bunny is encouraged to practice counting by his father.  So begins this long book, full with the fun and detailed illustrations that we have come to associate with Richard Scarry.  On every page there is something different to count.  Mr.  Scarry also introduces basic adding concepts, in addition to the basic counting menu.  I find that children are drawn to his comforting pictures and enjoy discovering the different objects to count on each page.
