Famous Constellations: Ursa Major, Ursa Minor and the Big and Little Dippers!

shutterstock_569889802Now you’ve all heard of the famous Big Dipper and Little Dipper.  I’m sure you also know about the Big Bear and Little Bear constellations or to use their latin terms, Ursa Major and Ursa Minor.

But did you know that the the group of stars commonly known as the Big Dipper and Ursa Major are actually the same thing?  And that the stars that make up the Little Dipper are also a part of the Ursa Minor constellation?

Or to be more precise, the handle of the Big Dipper is the bear’s tail and the the dipper’s cup is the bear flank in the Big Bear constellation. The Little Dipper is the bear’s tail and flank in the Little Bear constellation.   In fact both the Big Dipper and the Little Dipper are actually not constellations but asterisms.  An asterism is a distinctive group of stars.

But how did the Big Bear and Little Bear constellations get their names? Well every civilization has a different story, but what’s unusual about these constellations is that a lot of diverse cultures all decided that these two particular constellations looked like bears.

Native Indians in both Canada and the USA identify these constellations as bears, as well as the more familiar story from Greek and Roman mythology.  Native Indian stories  tell of a dramatic bear hunt led by a fearless warrior across the night sky.

The ancient Greeks and Romans – as usual- have an even more elaborate story to explain these bear-like constellations.

Callisto, a beautiful young woman was out hunting in the forest.  She became tired and decided to take a nap. Whilst she was sleeping, she caught the eye of the god Jupiter (Zeus in Greek Mythology).  Jupiter’s wife, Juno, (Hera in Greek Mythology) became extremely jealous of Callisto, because being jealous is Juno (Hera’s) main hobby.  Yes, she desperately needs to get another hobby.  Anything will do! Later, Juno found out that Callisto had given birth to a son. She believed that Jupiter (Zeus) was the father of her son. Driven mad by jealousy Juno, (Hera) transformed Callisto into a bear, so she would no longer be pretty. Callisto’s son was named Arcas.  He ended up being adopted and also grew up to be a hunter.  During this time Callisto still lived in the forest as a bear. One day Callisto-the- bear strolling through the forest caught sight of her long-lost son Arcas.  She was so excited to see him that she ran up to him, forgetting she was a bear. Arcas thought the bear was about to attack him and and shot an arrow at Callisto-the-bear, his actual mother.  Fortunately from up high in Olympia, Jupiter (Zeus) saw the arrow and prevented it from killing Callisto. To save Callisto and Arcas from further torment from Juno (Hera), Jupiter (Zeus) decided to change Arcas into a bear as well.   Then he grabbed both bears by their  tails, and flung them up in the night sky as the Big Bear and Little Bear constellations and there they stay, immortalized for all time.

The best time to view both these constellations is in early Spring, at around 9pm, (latitudes +90 degrees and -30 degrees).  You can either use a sky chart (downloadable on the internet) or an app.  My favorite stargazing app is the Sky Safari app.  It’s an excellent  tool for quickly identifying the constellations as they rotate through the celestial heavens!

Curious about Pisces the Fish?  The Story of Pisces and How to Spot this Constellation in the Night Sky

shutterstock_192001235

Pisces Characteristics:  Pisces represents those born from February 19—March 20.  Despite being near the beginning of our calendar year – in astrological terms – it is the 12th  and final sign of the Zodiac.

Good Things about Pisces: Artistic, gentle, musical, enthusiastic and very emotional!  So basically you’re fun loving and creative, but quite mad!

Bad Things about Pisces: Fearful, naïve, gullible, sad…likes to escape into a fantasy world.  So there’s a bit of the dungeons and dragons’ nerd about you fishes!

Myth and Legend: So what do the two fish represent?  Some ancient God’s pets?  No, the myth of Pisces begins with a monster, a particularly terrible monster named Typhoeus.  The father of all monsters, he was a fire breathing dragon that never slept and had over a hundred heads.  Sounds cute eh?  Side note, he later married another monster and had lots of baby monsters such as the Sphinx, the Nemean Lion and that ultimate lapdog Cerberus, the three headed dog of the underworld!

One day Typhoeus appeared and decided to get rid of all the Olympian Gods. They all fled in terror from him.  The Greek Goddess of love and beauty, Aphrodite, (Venus in Roman mythology) was sitting with her son Eros, (Cupid in Roman mythology) on the banks of the river Euphrates, when Typhoeus ran at them.  To escape the monster, they changed themselves into fish and swam away in the river.  In order not to lose one another, they tied their fins together with cord.

Athena, the Greek Goddess of wisdom and knowledge, (Minerva in Roman mythology) commemorated their escape by placing them in the sky as the Pisces constellation.

Element Sign: Water.  Unlike silly Aries, Pisces element sign makes sense. It’s water, so the whole fish, water thing goes nicely together.  Water signs (Scorpio, Pisces and Cancer) are supposed to be very emotional, sensitive and generally all over the place, sort of like water!

Glyph:  I know what you’re thinking? What does this glyph even represent?  It looks like a Chinese character more than a fish right?  But it’s actually an ancient symbol that represents the mouth of a fish.  Yes, it’s a stretch but then so is the Pisces constellation which looks more like a three year old writing its’ first letter V, rather than two co-joined fish.

pisces-glyph

Constellation:  Pisces is a difficult constellation to spot, due to its’ large size and dim looking stars.  Dim as in light not as in brains! Constellations don’t have brains, as far as I know! It can be best seen in the northern hemisphere between November 6th and November 9th  at 9pm (between latitudes 90 degrees and minus 65 degrees).  In the southern hemisphere, look for the Pisces constellation in mid-spring.   Use a star map as a guide. As always a knowledgeable person with you, to help find the constellation can be very helpful!

 pisces-constellation

Extra Fun Fact: Did you know that the Pisces constellation has twenty one main stars?  Overall it is the 14th largest constellation.

Next Post.  Curious about the Star-Sign Aries, the Ram (March 21-April 19)?  The Story of Aries and How to spot this Constellation in the Night Sky.

Fun Space Facts for Children: Pluto, the Dwarf

Pluto Image

The Dwarf Planet Pluto

Name:   Pluto is named after the Roman God of the Underworld and judge of the dead. Hades is the Greek equivalent.  As king of the Underworld, who do you think he has for a faithful companion? Yes, man’s best friend, a dog.  But this being the hellish underworld, Cerberus is no ordinary dog.  He’s a gigantic three headed monster (remember Fluffy from Harry Potter?) who guards the gates and prevents the dead from leaving.

Diameter: 1,473 miles; 2,370 kilometers

Temperature:  -356°F; -215.55°C

Fun Pluto Facts:  The planet was only discovered in 1930 by the American astronomer Clyde Tombaugh.  Venetia Burney, an 11 year old English girl  won an international contest to name the planet.  Pluto keeps the tradition of naming the planets after the Roman Gods.  It also seemed a good name for such a faraway and mysterious planet!

On July 14, 2015, Nasa’s New Horizons probe did the first ever flyby of the mysterious planet Pluto.  Thanks to all new images sent back, scientists know a lot more.  For instance, Pluto has huge ice mountains and vast glaciers.  One big surprise…Pluto has a blue sky, just like our Earth!

Pluto has five moons.  One large one named Charon and four smaller ones named, Styx, Nix, Kerberos and Hydra. Charon is the ferryman taking deceased souls to the underworld. Styx is the river that Charon rows them across. Nix is named after the Greek Goddess of the night. Hydra is the nine-headed underworld serpent and Kerboros is the Greek spelling of Cerberus, the famous three headed dog as mentioned above, that guards the entrance to the underworld.

Unlike the nearby gas giants, Pluto is a small rocky planetoid, covered in ice.  You could actually stand on its surface.  But you’d need to wrap up, it’s seriously freezing there!

Pluto is also the star of Amelia’s Amazing Space Adventures, my children’s space adventure series.  Uglesnoo is a cute friendly alien from Pluto.  On earth he ends up becoming a present.  A present that’s not a present! Pluto is also where the tenth and last book in the Amelia’s Amazing Space Adventure series takes place.  In Amelia, the Plutonians and the Creation Vacation, Amelia and Uglesnoo travel to Pluto.  Theres’ only a few hours left to save Uglesnoo’s sister. Will they manage it? Amelia and Uglesnoo realize they are being watched… They need to reach Noolong, Uglesnoo’s sister. Can they give their enemy the slip?

Next post: My next few posts will be about best books for children and fun activities for children.  After that, I’ll be back with some fun facts about the constellations, meteors, comets and other galaxies!

Fun Space Facts for Children: Uranus, the Lone Side Spinner

Uranus Image

The Planet Uranus

Name:   Uranus was discovered by the British astronomer William Herschel in 1871.  At the time King George III was on the throne in England.  The astronomer wanted to name the planet George, in honor of his king.  This idea proved unpopular with astronomers from other countries.  Instead they decided to call it after the ancient Greek God of the Sky, Ouranos, (Uranus is another spelling of the same name).  It is the only planet named after a Greek, rather than a Roman God.

 Diameter: 31,764 miles/ 51119.20 Kilometers

Temperature:  -350°F; -212°C

Fun Uranus Facts:  What’s one weird thing about Uranus?    It’s the only planet to spin on its side!  Most planets are like a spinning top when pressed down.  That’s how they rotate.  But imagine tipping that top over and spinning its middle.  That’s how Uranus rolls!

Uranus is another gas planet.  Hydrogen and helium are the main gases.  Scientists believe it has an icy-rather than rocky core-made up of water, methane and ammonia.

You have to use a telescope to see Uranus.  When you look at it, you’ll see it has a blue –green light.  Sunlight reflects from Uranus’s clouds, which lie beneath a layer of methane gas.  This gives Uranus its distinctive color.

And then there’s Uranus’s funny name.  The only planet that makes school children giggle the world over.  However-according to NASA-it’s actually pronounced YOOR-un-us.  At least that’s the only way they say it…without blushing!

Uranus also plays a starring role in the eighth book of the Amelia’s Amazing Space Adventures series.  In book eight, Amelia, the Urano and the Seer of all Time,  Amelia and Uglesnoo, her alien friend from Pluto visit Uranus and face their biggest challenge so far. They need to find something that does not exist. Or does it? Uglesnoo struggles to believe. Amelia has many obstacles to overcome before she can  get the next item off the list. Curious about the series?
