A Journey Across Our Solar System
If you’re new to the series, Amelia’s Amazing Space Adventures follows Amelia and her purple alien friend, Uglesnoo, as they travel to every planet, moon, and even the Sun, collecting special objects so they can get a repelling crystal from Queen Neep, the only thing that can save Uglesnoo’s sick little sister, Noolong.
Along the way they meet unforgettable alien creatures, solve puzzles, face impossible challenges, and discover that courage, kindness, and friendship can overcome even the greatest obstacles.
Each adventure is inspired by the real science of our Solar System while adding plenty of imagination, fantasy, and fun for young readers aged 5–10.

Have you ever looked up at the night sky and seen a group of stars shining like a twinkling picture? One of the easiest constellations to find is Canis Major, which means “Greater Dog” in Latin. This constellation has a fascinating story behind it, and if you know where to look, you can find it yourself!
The Myth Behind Canis Major
Long ago, the ancient Greeks told stories about the stars. One famous tale is about Orion, a mighty hunter. Orion had a loyal dog, and many believe Canis Major represents this faithful companion. Some stories say that Canis Major is Laelaps, a magical dog who could run faster than anything on Earth. Zeus, the king of the gods, placed the dog in the sky, where it became the bright constellation we see today.
How to Find Canis Major in the Sky
Finding Canis Major is easy if you know what to look for. First, find Orion’s Belt, a straight line of three bright stars. Then, look slightly below it, and you’ll see the brightest star in the night sky—Sirius! This dazzling star is part of Canis Major and is often called the “Dog Star.”
Once you find Sirius, look for the stars forming the shape of a dog around it. You might need to use your imagination, but soon, you’ll see a picture of a great dog running through the sky!
Why is Sirius So Bright?
Sirius is the brightest star we can see at night because it is one of the closest stars to Earth and burns very hot. Ancient civilizations, like the Egyptians, used Sirius to track the seasons because it appeared in the sky just before the Nile River flooded, which helped their crops grow.
A Fun Activity for Star Gazers
The best time to see Canis Major is in the winter. If you have a pair of binoculars, try looking at Sirius—it sparkles with different colors because of the way Earth’s atmosphere bends its light. See how many different colors you can spot!
Next time you go outside at night, challenge yourself and your friends to find Canis Major. Imagine the great dog running across the sky, always keeping an eye on his friend Orion. Happy stargazing!
The best time to view this constellation, (in the northern hemisphere) is in February, at around 9pm, (latitudes between +60° and −90°.). You can either use a sky chart (downloadable on the internet) or an app. My favorite stargazing app is the Sky Safari app. It’s an excellent tool for quickly identifying the constellations, as they rotate through the celestial heavens.

When you look up into the night sky, nearly everything that you can see with the naked eye belongs to our galaxy, the Milky Way. But how did it get named after a chocolate bar? The answer is, it didn’t! The Milky Way was named thousands of years ago, by the Romans. The Latin name, Via Lacteal, means milky path. But in true Roman style, they pinched it from the Greeks, along with the Greek pantheon of Gods! Galaxias Kyklos, meaning milky circle, is the ancient Greek name for the Milky Way.
Many thousands of years later in 1923, a man named Frank C. Mars created the Milky Way chocolate bar. It was named after a famous malted milkshake, which in turn took its name from Earth’s galaxy!
Extra Fun Fact: Did you know that there are three types of galaxies; elliptical, spiral and irregular? The Milky Way is a spiral galaxy and contains billions of stars!

Name: Pluto is named after the Roman God of the Underworld and judge of the dead. Hades is the Greek equivalent. As king of the Underworld, who do you think he has for a faithful companion? Yes, man’s best friend, a dog. But this being the hellish underworld, Cerberus is no ordinary dog. He’s a gigantic three headed monster (remember Fluffy from Harry Potter?) who guards the gates and prevents the dead from leaving.
Diameter: 1,473 miles; 2,370 kilometers
Temperature: -356°F; -215.55°C
Fun Pluto Facts: The planet was only discovered in 1930 by the American astronomer Clyde Tombaugh. Venetia Burney, an 11 year old English girl won an international contest to name the planet. Pluto keeps the tradition of naming the planets after the Roman Gods. It also seemed a good name for such a faraway and mysterious planet!
On July 14, 2015, Nasa’s New Horizons probe did the first ever flyby of the mysterious planet Pluto. Thanks to all new images sent back, scientists know a lot more. For instance, Pluto has huge ice mountains and vast glaciers. One big surprise…Pluto has a blue sky, just like our Earth!
Pluto has five moons. One large one named Charon and four smaller ones named, Styx, Nix, Kerberos and Hydra. Charon is the ferryman taking deceased souls to the underworld. Styx is the river that Charon rows them across. Nix is named after the Greek Goddess of the night. Hydra is the nine-headed underworld serpent and Kerboros is the Greek spelling of Cerberus, the famous three headed dog as mentioned above, that guards the entrance to the underworld.
Unlike the nearby gas giants, Pluto is a small rocky planetoid, covered in ice. You could actually stand on its surface. But you’d need to wrap up, it’s seriously freezing there!
Pluto is also the star of Amelia’s Amazing Space Adventures, my children’s space adventure series. Uglesnoo is a cute friendly alien from Pluto. On earth he ends up becoming a present. A present that’s not a present! Pluto is also where the tenth and last book in the Amelia’s Amazing Space Adventure series takes place. In Amelia, the Plutonians and the Creation Vacation, Amelia and Uglesnoo travel to Pluto. Theres’ only a few hours left to save Uglesnoo’s sister. Will they manage it? Amelia and Uglesnoo realize they are being watched… They need to reach Noolong, Uglesnoo’s sister. Can they give their enemy the slip?
