Fun Space Facts for Children: Pluto, the Dwarf

Pluto Image

The Dwarf Planet Pluto

Name:   Pluto is named after the Roman God of the Underworld and judge of the dead. Hades is the Greek equivalent.  As king of the Underworld, who do you think he has for a faithful companion? Yes, man’s best friend, a dog.  But this being the hellish underworld, Cerberus is no ordinary dog.  He’s a gigantic three headed monster (remember Fluffy from Harry Potter?) who guards the gates and prevents the dead from leaving.

Diameter: 1,473 miles; 2,370 kilometers

Temperature:  -356°F; -215.55°C

Fun Pluto Facts:  The planet was only discovered in 1930 by the American astronomer Clyde Tombaugh.  Venetia Burney, an 11 year old English girl  won an international contest to name the planet.  Pluto keeps the tradition of naming the planets after the Roman Gods.  It also seemed a good name for such a faraway and mysterious planet!

On July 14, 2015, Nasa’s New Horizons probe did the first ever flyby of the mysterious planet Pluto.  Thanks to all new images sent back, scientists know a lot more.  For instance, Pluto has huge ice mountains and vast glaciers.  One big surprise…Pluto has a blue sky, just like our Earth!

Pluto has five moons.  One large one named Charon and four smaller ones named, Styx, Nix, Kerberos and Hydra.

Unlike the nearby gas giants, Pluto is a small rocky planetoid, covered in ice.  You could actually stand on its surface.  But you’d need to wrap up, it’s seriously freezing there!

Pluto is also the star of Amelia’s Amazing Space Adventures, my children’s space adventure series.  Uglesnoo is a cute friendly alien from Pluto.  On earth he ends up becoming a present.  A present that’s not a present! Uglesnoo desperately needs help, as his sister is very sick.  Can Amelia help him?  Should she venture into outer space?

Next post: My next few posts will be about best books for children and fun activities for children.  After that, I’ll be back with some fun facts about the constellations, meteors, comets and other galaxies!

Fun Space Facts for Children: Mercury, the Speedy Planet

Mercury Image

The Planet Mercury

Name: Mercury rushes around the Sun in eighty-eight days.  So, ancient Romans watching the night sky named this speedy planet after Mercury; their messenger God, (the same God in Greek myth is called Hermes).  Statues of the God Mercury often show him with a winged helmet and winged feet.

Diameter: 3,032 miles; 4879.53 kilometers

Length of Day:  30 Earth Days

Fun Mercury Facts: It’s the second smallest planet in the solar system, after tiny Pluto.  It’s also the planet that is closest to our Sun.

If you ever visit, bring a helmet!  Mercury’s surface looks a lot like our Moon, full of craters.  That’s because like the Moon, there’s no atmosphere and it keeps getting pelted by asteroids.

Mercury also plays a starring role in the third book of Amelia’s Amazing Space Adventures.  Amelia, and Uglesnoo visit Mercury in Amelia, the Merballs and the Emerald Cannon,
enjoying another incredible adventure as they continue their space quest to save Uglesnoo’s sister!

Next post: Fun facts about our Sun.

How Amelia’s Amazing Space Adventures Began…

Solar System Illustration 9-14

One chilly winter’s day I showed my daughter a map of the solar system, in an attempt to entertain her.  Her eyes glazed over as I showed her pictures of Mars and Venus, then she yawned and asked, “Where’s the doggy?”

Now, how could I make space interesting, entertaining even? Hmmm. Think, think…An alien visiting from Pluto. Uglesnoo, a fun name for him. Amelia after Amelia Earhart, the famous aviatrix. Plus, it’s a lovely name. Now what would Uglesnoo be doing on Earth? A quest, yes he was here on a quest to save his sister! And this quest will take him and Amelia to the Moon, Sun and all the planets in the Solar System where  they would meet lots of crazy aliens and enjoy many fantastic adventures!

So began the story of, Amelia, the Moochins and the Sapphire Palace, the first book in Amelia’s Amazing Space Adventures, a series of ten for children ages 6-10.

Curious about the series? Find out more!
