Fun Space Facts for Children: Uranus, the Lone Side Spinner

Uranus Image

The Planet Uranus

Name:   Uranus was discovered by the British astronomer William Herschel in 1871.  At the time King George III was on the throne in England.  The astronomer wanted to name the planet George, in honor of his king.  This idea proved unpopular with astronomers from other countries.  Instead they decided to call it after the ancient Greek God of the Sky, Ouranos, (Uranus is another spelling of the same name).  It is the only planet named after a Greek, rather than a Roman God.

 Diameter: 31,764 miles/ 51119.20 Kilometers

Temperature:  -350°F; -212°C

Fun Uranus Facts:  What’s one weird thing about Uranus?    It’s the only planet to spin on its side!  Most planets are like a spinning top when pressed down.  That’s how they rotate.  But imagine tipping that top over and spinning its middle.  That’s how Uranus rolls!

Uranus is another gas planet.  Hydrogen and helium are the main gases.  Scientists believe it has an icy-rather than rocky core-made up of water, methane and ammonia.

You have to use a telescope to see Uranus.  When you look at it, you’ll see it has a blue –green light.  Sunlight reflects from Uranus’s clouds, which lie beneath a layer of methane gas.  This gives Uranus its distinctive color.

And then there’s Uranus’s funny name.  The only planet that makes school children giggle the world over.  However-according to NASA-it’s actually pronounced YOOR-un-us.  At least that’s the only way they say it…without blushing!

Uranus also plays a starring role in the eighth book of the Amelia’s Amazing Space Adventures series.  In book eight, Amelia, the Urano and the Seer of all Time,  Amelia and Uglesnoo, her alien friend from Pluto visit Uranus and face their biggest challenge so far. They need to find something that does not exist. Or does it? Uglesnoo struggles to believe. Amelia has many obstacles to overcome before she can  get the next item off the list. Curious about the series?

Fun Space Facts for Children: Saturn, the Ringed Planet

Saturn Image

The Planet Saturn

Name:   Saturn was the father of Jupiter in Roman Mythology.  Kronos  is the Greek equivalent.  Saturn was a God of agriculture and also of time. Saturn the God is often depicted with a sickle over one shoulder, (symbolic of the harvest) and a clock, (symbolic of his role as timekeeper) held in his hand.

Diameter: 74,900 miles/1,20539.87 Kilometers

Temperature:  -218°F; -138.89°C

Fun Saturn Facts:  You probably remember seeing Saturn with its famous rings. But do you know what they are made of?  Rock, ice and dust, most of which are tiny!  How the rings came to be remain a mystery.  Some think they should have been a moon, that for some reason failed to form.  Others think that a moon existed, but then got broken apart.  Maybe someday we’ll get an answer.

Saturn is mainly made of gases; hydrogen with a little helium.  Scientists think there’s a spinning solid core.  It’s the least dense of any planet, meaning it weighs next to nothing, less than water.  If you could find a swimming pool big enough, Saturn would float happily on the surface! Saturn is the root word of one day of our week.  Can you guess which one?  Yes, it’s Saturday!

Saturn is also the star of Amelia’s Amazing Space Adventures, my children’s space adventure series.  Uglesnoo is a cute friendly alien from Pluto.  On earth he ends up becoming a present.  A present that’s not a present! In book seven, Amelia, the Satsuts and the Oblivion Potion, Uglesnoo and Amelia travel to Saturn, as part of their quest.  The Satsuts, the aliens that live on Saturn, are friendly, but enemies are here as well. They need to collect the item  from the list to save Uglesnoo’s sister. Disaster hits when Amelia tastes something forbidden.  Is there any hope left for the quest?

Fun Space Facts for Children: Mars, the Red Planet

Mars Image

The Planet Mars:  Did Martians ever invade Earth?

Name:   Mars is named after the Roman God of war, after its red color, which reminded the ancient Romans of blood!

Diameter: 4,222 miles

Temperature:  -81°F; -62.77°C.

Fun Mars Facts: Did Martians ever invade Earth?  On Sunday October 30, 1938, the United States went into mass hysteria, when the radio announced to its’ million listeners that a Martian invasion of our Earth was underway.  People were terrified.  They fled en masse in their cars, jamming the highways, fleeing the vengeful Martians.   Until…Mr. Orson Welles, a director, came on air to tell people that they were actually listening to a play!  This play was adapted from H.G. Welles famous novel, ‘War of the Worlds,’ a great read to this day.  This fictional work describes Martians landing on Earth and destroying our planet!

On July 4, 1997, Nasa successfully landed a little robot named Sojourner from its NASA pathfinder spacecraft.  The amazing Sojourner roamed around the planet Mars-the first robot to do so-beaming back amazing pictures of Mars and taking numerous samples.  This helps scientists learn more about how Mars was formed.

Mars has two Moons.  They are named Phobos, (meaning panic/fear) and Deimos, (meaning terror/dread).  These are two characters that according to Greek mythology accompany their father, the God of war, into battle.

Mons Olympus, a now extinct Volcano on Mars, is the tallest volcano in the entire solar system!

Mars also plays a starring role in the fifth book of the Amelia’s Amazing Space Adventures series.  In book five, Amelia, the Magolytes and the Victory Vines, Amelia and Uglesnoo need to trade with the tricky Magolytes, aliens that live on Mars. But the Magolytes possess a deadly weapon.  Amelia and Uglesnoo find themselves running away… But then they are helped by the mysterious victory vines. Ready to blast off from Mars, they still face one big fiery problem. Will they manage to outwit the sly Magolytes?  Curious about the series?

☀️ What Is the Sun?

The Sun is a star — a HUGE star — sitting right at the center of our solar system. All the planets, including Earth, travel around it.

📝 Where Does the Word “Sun” Come From?

⏱️ Sunlight takes about 8 minutes to reach us
🌡️ The surface of the Sun is about 10,000°F — that’s HOT!

Uglesnoo is a friendly alien from Pluto who accidentally ends up on Earth — wrapped as a birthday present for Amelia’s 8th birthday! 🎁👽
That night, he reveals the truth: his sister is very sick, and only a powerful repelling crystal can save her.

To earn the crystal, Uglesnoo must travel to:
🌙 the Moon
☀️ the Sun
and every planet in the solar system

He has only two weeks — and he can’t do it alone.

The Sun holds one of the most dangerous challenges yet… the Molten Maze, home to the mysterious Snapperjacks.

Will Amelia go with him?
Can she face the heat, the fear, and the maze?

☀️ The adventure continues…

Amelia’s Amazing Space Adventures blends real space facts with imagination, courage, and friendship — perfect for curious readers ages 6–10.

Fun Space Facts for Children: Mercury, the Speedy Planet

Mercury Image

The Planet Mercury

Name: Mercury rushes around the Sun in eighty-eight days.  So, ancient Romans watching the night sky named this speedy planet after Mercury; their messenger God, (the same God in Greek myth is called Hermes).  Statues of the God Mercury often show him with a winged helmet and winged feet.

Diameter: 3,032 miles; 4879.53 kilometers

Length of Day:  30 Earth Days

Fun Mercury Facts: It’s the second smallest planet in the solar system, after tiny Pluto.  It’s also the planet that is closest to our Sun.

If you ever visit, bring a helmet!  Mercury’s surface looks a lot like our Moon, full of craters.  That’s because like the Moon, there’s no atmosphere and it keeps getting pelted by asteroids.

Mercury also plays a starring role in the third book of Amelia’s Amazing Space Adventures.  Amelia, and Uglesnoo visit Mercury in Amelia, the Merballs and the Emerald Cannon,
enjoying another incredible adventure as they continue their space quest to save Uglesnoo’s sister!

Fun Space Facts for Children: Our Moon

The Moon

Name: Moon comes from an old English word, Mona, meaning month or to measure.

That’s why we see:

  • 🌑 New Moon
  • 🌓 Half Moon
  • 🌕 Full Moon

The Moon loves to change costumes!

Have you ever looked up at the night sky and seen a big, glowing circle smiling down at you? That’s the Moon, Earth’s closest space neighbor — and it’s full of surprises!

Let’s blast off and learn more 🚀

🌕 What Is the Moon?

The Moon is Earth’s natural satellite, which means it travels around our planet all the time. It doesn’t make its own light — it shines because it reflects light from the Sun.

Without the Moon:

  • Nights would be much darker 🌌
  • The oceans wouldn’t have tides 🌊
  • Earth would wobble more as it spins!

So even though it looks quiet, the Moon is very important.

Fun Moon Facts:

🌟 Fun Facts About the Moon

🌕 The Moon is about ¼ the size of Earth
👣 Astronauts have walked on it — and left footprints that may last millions of years!
🧀 The Moon is not made of cheese (sorry!)
🚀 You could jump 6 times higher on the Moon than on Earth
🌍 The same side of the Moon always faces Earth — the other side is called the far side
🌕 They used to think there was only one moon, until Galileo found satellites orbiting around Jupiter.  He also called them moons, after our own moon.
🌍 Outside of Earth, the moon is the only other place humans have visited.  American Astronaut, Neil Armstrong, was the first man to land on the moon on, July 20, 1969; a great day for humankind!

Best Books for Children, Ages 8-12. The Animals of Farthing Wood by Colin Dann: Oldies, but Goodies!

The Animals of Farthing Wood, by Colin Dann

Animals of Farthing Wood

I read this book when it first came out in 1979. Yes, I am that old! My daughter was skeptical when I handed her a copy to read, but soon became completely engrossed.

An early environmental tale, The Animals of Farthing Wood is the story of a group of woodland animals whose home is threatened with destruction by bulldozers. Led by Badger, the animals plot their escape. Many trials and near misses mark their way to a new home. The plot is engaging, the animal characters heartwarming and you bond with them, as they do with each other,  on their perilous journey to a new home.
